the manufactured, entirely made-up “war on christmas” makes me madder than it probably should. the only people who still believe in its existence are either doing so as a performance for some audience, or are self-deluded assholes who still probably believe in santa claus.
i know i’m not breaking any new ground here.
the idea that some nebulous collection of “liberals” are trying to steal the joy out of children’s hearts is such a tantalizing straw man to fox news that they simply can’t help but build it. even though the christmas season now dominates two full months of the calendar year. even though SHOPPING for christmas gifts has birthed not one, but two ancillary pseudo-holidays. even though every major retail chain and media outlet lay out time and energy specifically catering to christmas both as a commercial exercise and as a concept. fox just can’t help but pretend to be wounded by the idea that someone, somewhere, might want to say “holidays” instead of christmas. that someone might, out of simple consideration for their fellow man, accidentally mention that other religions have the temerity to EXIST in this great nation.
the good people at fox hide behind the smarmy bullshit idea that THEY are the only ones who will protect the true spirit of the season, while at the same time using every resource available to disenfranchise and vilify the poor and minorities. how very christian of them.
and i guess that’s what makes me really mad. pretending to be the sole defenders of jesus’ birthday from a scrum of swarthy interlopers while simultaneously doing everything they can to betray the very ideals that christianity should stand for. it’s a heartless co-opting of a holiday they don’t seem to understand for the sole purpose of smearing their political opponents.
